The Evil of Gift Certificates

No one buys real gifts anymore. We give cash, gift certificates, or we let the recipient pick it out herself, and in some cases even buy and (gasp) wrap it herself.

Why is this? Well I have a theory. It is a consequence of the break down of community. No one knows anyone else well enough to buy a thoughful gift.

Is it just me, or is anyone else bothered by this?

You are by no means the only one.

I make my mom pick out gifts at Christmas time. I tell her I would so much rather get a "gift" and have to take it back rather than a "gift card" where I choose. There's no sentimental value in something you choose yourself.

I do think you are right in saying that few people know anyone well enough to select a meaningful gift. I think the breakdown of community is only the tip of the iceberg. Might giftcards also say something about "what is right for me is not necessarily right for you"?

I've been ranting about that for a while. I'm with you.
